Improving Mental Concentration Means Breaking Down Both Real And Imaginary Mental Barriers!

When training your brain to concentrate more effectively, the main obstacle you will immediately encounter one or more forms of mental resistance to the extended effort of holding your attention steady.  Just as your arm would eventually become weary and unable to continue lifting a heavy weight held out in front of your body, your brain burns a major amount of energy when working to maintain a consistent ’signal’ of attention targeted onto a single task.  Your ability to keep your attention fixed on a targeted task may last from as little as a few seconds to a few minutes (varying from person to person), but rarely more than that before it is interrupted by at least one of four very familiar culprits:

  1. Wandering Thoughts - indicating that your mind isn’t relaxed and calm, so thoughts keep rising up or you find yourself engaging in a conversation in your head.
  2. Impulsivity - means your body isn’t relaxed and calm enough to prevent impatient fidgeting and moving around.
  3. Outside Interruptions - when your mind keeps trying to attend to external events such as distracting noises.
  4. Mental Fatigue - happens as your brain simply gets tired from  the intense expenditure of energy, just as your body gets weary when you sprint in a race.

Reaching the limit of your ability to hold your attention onto a single thing is like “hitting a wall” where you can’t go any further and feel the need to rest your brain for a minute before trying again to concentrate.  Getting to that point is actually good for your brain training progress because:

A)  You can biologically sculpt your brain into a healthier state of physical and mental condition by the habit of consistent practice at concentrating on knocking against that wall repeatedly until it comes crumbling down.
B)  When you practice going just a little bit past the limits of that wall, you benefit from increased confidence, mental control, and endurance.  At the same time, you’ll find that your creativity, problem-solving ability, intuition, and other mental talents are more generously available to you.
C)  In the moment you hit the wall, it means you are actually able to control your attention long enough to reach your endurance limit, rather than be distracted by interfering thoughts, impulsiveness, or outside interruptions.  Anytime you hit your wall, congratulate yourself on your level of mental management.

Consistently overcoming mental resistance (’MENTAL RESISTANCE TRAINING’) when learning how to concentrate effectively is key.  Do not become frustrated when you hit your mental wall, but use the fact that you’ve run into it to write down how long it takes you to do so.  Then, give yourself a minute to refresh, and begin again, exerting yourself a bit more as you approach your limit so that you can go just slightly past it, and then note that time.  Continue to use this progressive approach and you shall soon find yourself filled with new confidence in your ability to trust and command your own mind for greater mental control.

BURNING DESIRE AS A MENTAL FOCUS TOOL:
STOKING THE FURNACE OF DESIRE TO GET WHAT YOU WANT

If you've ever had any significant exposure to the worlds of Finance, Business, Sports or related areas, you've probably suffered through sermons delivered by various Ministers from The Church of Achievement, preaching the virtues of DESIRE.  Doubtless the voices have been passionately strained in sincerity and backed by misguided belief assuming that if only they can pound their pulpit strongly enough the noise itself might wake you from your slumbering mental drudgery and lift you up from your easy chair, sending you onto the battlefield of competitive achievement snarling and slobbering and flailing your arms ready for the fight of your life.  Somewhere in those sermons have been calls for you to embrace ideas such as 'zealot' and 'obsessed' and 'consumed'.

Real personal power is never mindless, and a person who is an effective Executive over their own Mind is -  by that same power - in charge of the direction and probabilities that pave their DESTINY.  Anyone who is a zealot, an obsessive, or a consumed human being is not in charge of themselves, but has surrendered and turned over their freedom of Will to mindless desperation, and you can be assured that it is a life of well-disguised suffering.  To see the truth of it, you need only objectively observe such a person.

For Mental Fitness Trainees, there is never a submissive surrender of self-control to an emotional or mental state, therefore, in regards to the state of Desire, any system of training that has your best interest at heart must show you how to take Desire and use it as a TOOL, with you in utmost CONTROL of how it is applied to bring you the success you're looking for.  How then is Desire to be used in a way that helps you achieve your goal while gaining more personal power and self-ownership in the process?

Dynamic Mental Fitness Trainees use Desire as a creative CHISEL!  Keeping in mind that Dynamic Mental Fitness Training is different from other types of 'brain training' (merely solving puzzles and playing entertaining games) and 'mental fitness' (fostering positive emotions and reducing stress) because Dynamic Mental Fitness is based on expanding your mental power - Mental Concentration, Mental Focus, Willpower, and Mental Discipline - in order to experience and enjoy a unique life of uncommon significance.  A major part of that training process involves proactive management of your thoughts, emotions, impulses, and your mental states so that you can direct and apply them all to a higher purpose that you consciously construct.

Desire is your creative emotional chisel utilized by you - Master Craftsman of your own life - to carve non-specific blocks of THOUGHT into SPECIFIC OBJECTS of attainment.  In that respect, you must step back from Desire and look at it as you would any old reliable tool in your garage, and handle it carefully, execute it skillfully, not allowing it to lead you by the nose.   The purpose of Desire is to provide the impetus to formulate a conceptually clear, magnificently attractive, and logically detailed OBJECTIVE; that is, a GOAL supported by a definitive PLAN.  Seldom is that achieved in one sweeping moment of "EUREKA!"  Masters sit Masters sit and think.  Masters sit and think and turn the undefined block of stone around in their thought until the concept begins to take shape.  Masters use Desire to keep chipping away in imagination until the unclear becomes obvious.  When you know how to use it properly, Desire creates Masterpieces in your Mind.   And once the Masterpiece is wrought, you no longer need Desire.  At that point, you call upon your Focus and Willpower.
